Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to Meet with Trump Following U.S.-Russia Summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, after the recent U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska failed to reach an agreement to stop the war in Ukraine.
The summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin resulted in what they called an “understanding,” but no concrete commitments were made.
Trump has now shifted his stance, preferring a comprehensive peace deal over a ceasefire to end the war, aligning more closely with Russia’s position.
European leaders have welcomed Trump’s efforts but have not fully endorsed his preference for a peace agreement. They reiterated their support for a “just and lasting peace” and Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Previously, Trump had pushed for a ceasefire before negotiations, but analysts fear his new approach could allow Russia to continue military operations during talks.
Zelenskyy, who was not part of the Alaska summit, had a productive call with Trump and looks forward to discussing ways to end the conflict in their upcoming meeting.
Trump has also spoken with leaders from various European countries who are ready to support a trilateral summit involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of European involvement for future guarantees and expressed support for a three-way summit to address key issues.
However, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov stated that the topic of a trilateral meeting has not yet been discussed.
Zelenskyy urged Trump to strengthen sanctions on Russia if they do not engage in honest negotiations.
Despite diplomatic efforts, violence continues in Ukraine, with reports of both Ukrainian and Russian forces engaging in military actions.
The front line remains active, with Russian forces gaining more territory in recent months.
Experts believe that Putin’s main goal at the Alaska summit was to delay pressure on Russia to end the war, which he may view as a successful outcome.
