White House blasts antisemitism at Columbia University protests

White House Condemns Antisemitic Statements During Student Protests

WASHINGTON — The White House has fiercely condemned what it calls “blatantly antisemitic” statements made during ongoing student protests against the war in Gaza.

Deputy press secretary Andrew Bates stated that while students have the right to peaceful protest, “calls for violence and physical intimidation targeting Jewish students” are unacceptable.

Over 100 students were arrested at Columbia University in New York this week after police cleared a protest encampment at the prestigious institution.

President Biden Joins in Denouncing Antisemitism

In a separate statement, President Joe Biden also denounced “blatant antisemitism” on college campuses, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in the country.

New York Mayor Eric Adams expressed his horror and disgust at the antisemitism at Columbia University, vowing to take action against those breaking the law.

Concerns for Jewish Students’ Safety

A rabbi associated with the university advised 300 Jewish students to stay away from campus due to the unrest, while the Columbia Barnard Hillel called for more protection for students.

University Takes Action to Ensure Safety

Columbia University President Dr. Nemat Shafik described the clearing of the protest encampment as an “extraordinary step” necessary to provide a safe environment for all students.

Despite the ongoing demonstrations against the war in Gaza, efforts are being made to address antisemitism and ensure the safety of all students on college campuses across the US.
