Dr. Lai Xue, a colorectal surgeon, explains the risks associated with spending too much time on the porcelain throne.
Potty Problems from Sitting Too Long
According to Dr. Farah Monzur, spending more than 5-10 minutes on the toilet can have negative effects on your body. Gravity forces blood to work harder to circulate when you sit for extended periods, increasing pressure on veins and blood vessels. This can lead to issues like hemorrhoids.
Don’t Force It Either
Forced straining while on the toilet can also contribute to problems like hemorrhoids and rectal prolapse. Dr. Xue warns against spending too much time sitting and straining, as it weakens anal muscles and pelvic floor muscles.
Be More Mindful of Bathroom Time
To avoid health issues, experts recommend limiting your time on the toilet. Dr. Lance Uradomo suggests avoiding distractions like phones and books in the bathroom. Walking around if you’re having trouble relieving yourself can help stimulate bowel movements. Staying hydrated and eating high-fiber foods are also essential for maintaining healthy bowel movements.
Long Bathroom Times and Colorectal Cancer
While spending extra time on the toilet can be harmless for some, it can be a symptom of underlying health issues like gastrointestinal problems or even cancer. If you experience persistent constipation or discomfort, it’s important to consult a doctor. Young adults are increasingly being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, making it crucial to address any concerning symptoms early on.
