Antony Blinken Warns of Acute Food Insecurity in Gaza
MANILA — US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has sounded the alarm on the dire situation in Gaza, stating that all two million residents are facing “severe levels of acute food insecurity.”
During a visit to the Philippines, Blinken emphasized the urgent need for Israel to prioritize providing assistance to those in need in Gaza.
UN agencies have also warned of a potential famine in north Gaza by May if the fighting does not cease and aid is not increased.
Blinken’s remarks come amidst ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in the region, with Israeli negotiators set to engage in talks with Hamas in Qatar.
Highlighting the severity of the crisis, Blinken stated that “100% of the population in Gaza is at severe levels of acute food insecurity,” a classification never before seen for an entire population.
Acute food insecurity poses immediate danger to individuals’ lives and livelihoods, potentially leading to starvation if unaddressed.
He also emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in Gaza, pointing out that the entire population is in need of support.
While calling on Hamas to disarm, Blinken stressed that Israel must also prioritize providing for those in desperate need of assistance.
The discussions during his trip will focus on securing and governing Gaza in the aftermath of the conflict, with a particular emphasis on Arab support for a post-war plan.
Despite the ongoing challenges and disagreements, Blinken is committed to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and working towards a sustainable solution for the region.
US President Joe Biden has also been engaged in diplomatic efforts, urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reconsider military actions in Gaza and explore alternative approaches to targeting Hamas.
