Ed Sheeran Surprises Fans at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Festival

BELFAST — Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has taken fans by storm with an unexpected performance at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann music and arts festival in Wexford town.

Playing a mix of original songs and traditional Irish tunes, Sheeran shared the stage with Irish bands Amble, BIIRD, Beoga, and Aaron Rowe at the Sky and The Ground pub on Tuesday night.

Originally from Suffolk, Sheeran’s Irish roots run deep as his father hails from Belfast. In a recent announcement, Sheeran revealed his strong cultural connection to Ireland.

Not leaving any fan behind, Sheeran treated those outside the packed pub to an acoustic rendition of his hit single Perfect, showcasing his musical talent to all.

Joining forces with all-female trad supergroup BIIRD, Sheeran performed the traditional folk song Wild Mountain Thyme, captivating the audience with their harmonious blend of vocals and instruments.

As the crowd sang along, Sheeran’s guitar strumming was complemented by the sounds of violin and bodhrán, creating a magical atmosphere in the cozy pub.

Collaborating with Aaron Rowe and Irish folk band Amble, BIIRD, and Sheeran delivered a soulful rendition of Raglan Road, a timeless Irish classic that resonated with the enthusiastic Fleadh-goers.

Bringing the evening to a close, the talented musicians united for a heartfelt performance of The Parting Glass, showcasing their collective passion for traditional Irish music.

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, known as the All-Ireland Fleadh, is a week-long celebration of Irish music that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the host town each August.

Organized by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the festival highlights the rich tradition of Irish music through street performances, competitions, and concerts featuring both established and emerging artists.

Founded in 1951 by traditional musicians and cultural advocates, Comhaltas hosts various fleadhanna throughout Ireland, with Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann being the most renowned event in the calendar.
