Stephen Hitchen, the newly appointed British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, arrived in Riyadh last week with his family, immersing themselves in the culture by attending the Esports Cup and exploring Diriyah. The adventurous diplomat expressed his excitement about touring the diverse regions of the Kingdom, from Najran to Dammam, AlUla, and the vast Empty Quarter.
“My family and I have already relished the renowned Saudi hospitality, and we are eager to discover the picturesque mountains, vast deserts, charming towns, and vibrant cities of Saudi Arabia,” Hitchen remarked.
Assuming his official duties this month, Hitchen takes over from Neil Crompton, who concluded his term in July. With a background in diplomacy and a wealth of experience in the Middle East, Hitchen previously served as the British Ambassador to Iraq from 2023 to 2025.
His extensive resume includes a role as the Director for Middle East and North Africa (National Security) at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office from 2016 to 2019, along with assignments in Kuwait, Jordan, and Egypt, focusing on Iran and counter-terrorism.
Describing his appointment as “the greatest honor of my life,” Hitchen emphasized the deep-rooted friendship between Britain and Saudi Arabia, highlighting their shared histories and mutual aspirations for the future.
