Russian officials report the downing of over 100 Ukrainian drones in massive attack
KYIV — In a dramatic turn of events, Russian officials have reported the downing of more than 100 Ukrainian drones on Sunday. This marks one of the largest drone attacks on Russian territory since the start of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The intense barrage ignited a wildfire and set an apartment block ablaze, although miraculously, no casualties were reported.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense has claimed that a total of 125 drones were shot down across seven regions, with the city of Volgograd bearing the brunt of the assault. A staggering 67 drones were intercepted in Volgograd alone. In Voronezh, falling debris caused damage to an apartment building and a private home. Additionally, a wildfire erupted in Rostov due to debris from the downed drones, devouring 20 hectares of forest in its path.
As tensions escalate, 16 civilians were wounded in Russian airstrikes on the city of Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine. Fears are mounting over the possibility of new Russian offensives in the region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy swiftly condemned the attacks, highlighting the significant destruction inflicted on residential buildings and critical infrastructure. On the somber occasion of the 83rd anniversary of the Babyn Yar massacre, Zelenskyy used the moment to stress the importance of learning from history to prevent the rise of tyranny. — Agencies
