US Songwriter Jill Sobule Dies in Minneapolis House Fire
In a tragic turn of events, US songwriter Jill Sobule has passed away in a devastating house fire in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as confirmed by her publicist.
Sobule, known for her satirical anthem Supermodel that featured in the iconic 1995 film Clueless, was 66 years old at the time of her untimely death.
She was scheduled to perform in her hometown of Denver, Colorado on Friday, showcasing songs from her autobiographical stage musical. Instead, a free gathering will now be held in her honor.
Tributes from all over social media have been pouring in for Sobule, with English musician Lloyd Cole expressing his grief, stating, “I’m really too numb to post much of anything. We loved her. She loved us.”
Born in 1959, Sobule’s musical career spanned over three decades, addressing a wide range of topics such as the death penalty, anorexia, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Her most notable works came from her self-titled 1995 album, which featured hits like Supermodel and I Kissed a Girl.
Years later, her song I Kissed a Girl gained attention again in 2008 when Katy Perry released a single with the same title.
Sobule also made a mark as a pioneer in crowdfunding for album releases and contributed music for various theatre and television productions, including the theme song for the Nickelodeon show Unfabulous.
John Porter, Sobule’s manager, fondly remembers her as a “force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture.” He mourned her loss, saying, “I was having so much fun working with her. I lost a client & a friend today. I hope her music, memory, & legacy continue to live on and inspire others.”
Canadian music correspondent Eric Alper praised Sobule, stating she “paved the way with heart, humor, and honesty” and emphasized how she “changed the soundtrack — and the conversation”.
American actress Carrie Coon also shared her sorrow, posting, “Jill Sobule was so special. Heartbreaking news.”
Authorities in Woodbury suburb are currently investigating the cause of the fire at Sobule’s residence, as reported by the Star Tribune. — BBC
