Tragic Nepal floods claim 32 lives with 12 missing

Deadly Floods Strike Kathmandu, Nepal

KATHMANDU, Nepal — The relentless downpour in Nepal’s capital has led to catastrophic flooding, claiming the lives of at least 32 individuals, with 12 others still unaccounted for, as confirmed by the police on Saturday.

The heavy rains, which began pounding the city on Friday night, show no signs of letting up over the weekend. Nepal Police spokesman Bishwo Adhikari disclosed that 17 people sustained injuries and over 1,000 residents have been rescued in various parts of Kathmandu.

Law enforcement agencies nationwide have been mobilized to aid in the rescue operations. The government had previously issued warnings about potential flooding due to the anticipated torrential rains across the Himalayan country.

As a precautionary measure, night-time bus services on highways have been suspended, and motorists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Security forces are on high alert to respond to any emergencies.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak briefed the media about the extent of the damage in different regions of the country. However, authorities are still in the process of gathering comprehensive data. Lekhak emphasized that the primary focus of the government is on rescuing affected individuals and providing assistance.

In certain areas of Kathmandu, swollen rivers have burst their banks, submerging homes and compelling residents to seek refuge on higher floors. The southern part of the city has been severely impacted, prompting the army to conduct helicopter rescue missions for four trapped individuals.

A significant portion of Kathmandu faced disruptions in power and internet services due to the inundation caused by the floods.

Reports of landslides and flooding have also emerged from various parts of the country, indicating the widespread impact of the calamity.

The monsoon season, known for its heavy rainfall in Nepal, commenced in June and typically concludes by mid-September. — Agencies
