Saudi Arabia and Egypt demand Lebanon’s government to assert full sovereignty
In a joint statement issued on Sunday, Saudi Arabia and Egypt emphasized the importance of Lebanon’s government asserting full sovereignty over its territory. This comes amidst growing concerns over the influence of Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group backed by Iran, in the country.
The two countries called for the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, specifically Resolution 1559, which calls for the disarmament of all Lebanese militias. They also expressed support for the Lebanese people and their right to live in a free and sovereign state.
Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s statement comes as Lebanon grapples with a deep economic and political crisis, exacerbated by the devastating explosion in Beirut last year. The two countries have been vocal in their support for Lebanon’s stability and security, and have called for the international community to assist in rebuilding the country.
The joint statement is seen as a strong message to Hezbollah and its allies, who have been accused of undermining Lebanon’s sovereignty and interests. Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s call for Lebanon’s government to assert full sovereignty is a clear indication of their commitment to supporting Lebanon’s stability and security in the face of external threats.
