US Navy Sailor Convicted of Espionage for Selling Secrets to Chinese Agent
In a shocking case out of California, a 25-year-old US Navy sailor named Jinchao Wei has been found guilty of espionage for selling classified information to a Chinese agent who recruited him through social media.
Conviction and Charges
Wei was convicted on six charges, including espionage, conspiracy to commit espionage, and unlawful export of classified data about US Navy ships. US Attorney Adam Gordon condemned Wei’s actions as a betrayal of trust and a threat to national security.
Arrest and Evidence
Wei, also known as Patrick Wei, was arrested in August 2023 as he arrived for work on the USS Essex. During his trial, prosecutors presented phone conversations, electronic messages, and audio recordings that revealed Wei’s communication with his Chinese handler, whom he referred to as “Big Brother Andy.”
Betrayal and Secrecy
Wei’s actions were driven by financial gain, as he accepted over $12,000 in exchange for sensitive information about Navy ships. His mother even praised his espionage efforts, highlighting the depth of his betrayal and deception.
Recruitment and Payment
Wei was recruited by a Chinese intelligence officer posing as a naval enthusiast on social media. He provided photographs, videos, and details about Navy ships in exchange for payment. Wei now faces a potential life sentence for his crimes.
Co-Conspirator and Sentencing
Wei was arrested alongside Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao, who was found guilty of accepting money for sending sensitive information to Chinese intelligence. Zhao received a 27-month prison sentence for his role in the espionage scheme.
Despite the severity of their actions, both Wei and Zhao have yet to comment on their convictions. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threats to national security posed by individuals willing to betray their country for personal gain.
