Ukraine Launches Drone Attacks on Russian Oil Refineries
In a bold move, Ukraine has launched drone attacks on at least three major oil refineries deep inside Russia. This comes as Kyiv ramps up its cross-border strikes just days before President Vladimir Putin’s expected re-election.
A Ukrainian defense source revealed to CNN on Wednesday that Ukraine is strategically targeting Russian economic potential with these attacks.
The strikes hit three key oil refineries in Ryazan, Kstovo, and Kirishi, all significant facilities in Russia. Additionally, the Novoshakhtinsky oil refinery in Rostov-on-Don was also targeted in the assault.
This marks the second consecutive day of Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy sites, showing a clear escalation in the conflict.
According to the source, the goal is to cripple Russia’s resources and cut off the flow of oil money that is fueling the war.
The fallout from the attacks continued as pro-Ukrainian groups claimed control of the village of Tyotkino in Russia’s Kursk region, sparking further tensions along the border.
The Freedom for Russia Legion, a group of Russian dissidents fighting for Ukraine, claimed responsibility for destroying a command center in Tyotkino, signaling a shift in the conflict.
Russia’s defense ministry reported shooting down 58 Ukrainian drones overnight, supporting Ukraine’s involvement in the attacks.
Despite the intensity of the assaults, no casualties have been reported from the recent strikes.
The attacks are not only targeting Russia’s oil reserves but also sending a strong message to the Russian population as the country gears up for a controversial presidential election.
With Putin expected to secure a fifth term in office, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is reaching a critical juncture.
During a televised interview, Putin dismissed the attacks as a result of Kyiv’s failures on the battlefield, downplaying the significance of the escalating violence.
