Shocking: Tunisia denies Greta Thunberg’s Gaza flotilla drone attack

Tunisian Authorities Deny Drone Attack on Gaza Aid Vessel

TUNIS — In a dramatic turn of events, Tunisian authorities have refuted claims made by the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) that one of the Gaza-bound vessels, carrying aid and pro-Palestinian activists including Greta Thunberg, was attacked by a drone.

The GSF alleged that the Portuguese-flagged vessel was struck by a drone while anchored outside the port of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia. Despite this, all six passengers and crew were reported safe by the organisers.

A spokesperson for Tunisia’s national guard dismissed the claims, stating that no drone had been detected and that an investigation was currently underway.

Background of the Flotilla

The humanitarian aid flotilla embarked from Barcelona last week and made its way to Tunisia, where the alleged incident took place on Sunday.

The GSF referred to their vessel as the “Family boat” and claimed it was struck in Tunisian waters, causing damage to the main deck due to a fire that was extinguished by the crew.

Francesca Albanese, a UN Human Rights Council special rapporteur and Tunisian resident, emphasized the severity of the alleged attack, stating that if verified, it would be an “assault and aggression against Tunisia, and Tunisian sovereignty”.

History of Gaza Aid Flotillas

Previous attempts to deliver aid to Gaza have been met with obstacles, with Israeli forces boarding boats and detaining activists. Israel has labeled these efforts as mere publicity stunts that do not offer genuine humanitarian assistance.

Allegations of drone attacks on aid ships bound for Gaza have surfaced in the past, with the Freedom Flotilla claiming that one of their ships was targeted off the coast of Malta in May.

Controversy Surrounding Gaza Aid

Israel’s blockade on Gaza has led to severe humanitarian crises, with reports of famine in the territory. Israel has faced criticism for obstructing aid entering Gaza, leading to international pressure and a limited reinstatement of aid supplies.

In response to the humanitarian crisis, Israel introduced the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which has been met with skepticism from aid agencies.

Despite the ongoing tensions and challenges, activists and humanitarian organizations continue to push for the lifting of Israel’s blockade on Gaza to provide much-needed assistance to the residents of the territory.
