Shocking: Lion attacks and kills zookeeper in Nigeria

Tragedy Strikes: Zookeeper Mauled to Death by Lion in Nigeria

In a horrifying incident, a zookeeper met a tragic end at the hands of a lion in southwestern Nigeria. The fatal attack occurred at the Presidential Library Wildlife Park in Abeokuta, owned by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The victim, a 35-year-old man named Babaji Daule, was responsible for the care of the animals at the park. Local police spokesperson Omolola Odutola revealed that the lion caused fatal injuries to the man’s neck, leading to his untimely demise.

According to reports, the zookeeper had taken guests to observe the lion’s feeding routine after hours on Saturday evening. Feeling at ease with the animal, he left the safety protection gate open while feeding it, a decision that proved to be fatal.

Upon realizing the danger, park personnel had to intervene by shooting the lion to release its grip on the handler and prevent further harm. This tragic incident comes less than a year after a similar attack at another zoo in south-western Nigeria.

The incident has sparked concerns about the regulations and management of zoos in the country, raising questions about the safety protocols for handling wild animals. As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, the loss of the zookeeper serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in working closely with dangerous wildlife. — BBC
