Russian weapons and trainers land in Niger post US military deal

Russia Delivers Cutting-Edge Anti-Aircraft Defense Systems to Niger

In a bold move, Russia has shipped state-of-the-art military equipment to Niger, equipping the African nation with the latest anti-aircraft defense systems, as reported by Nigerien state broadcaster RTN on Thursday.

The delivery, which arrived in Niamey on Wednesday, also included 100 Russian military instructors who will not only set up the system but also provide training to Nigerien soldiers, according to RTN.

Furthermore, Russian state media RIA Novosti revealed on Friday that the Russian military instructors were dispatched to Niger with a mission to train local forces in counterterrorism efforts.

Describing the scene, an RIA Novosti correspondent emphasized that the arrival of Russian troops signifies a significant reentry of Russia into Africa. This development comes amidst the arrival of NATO forces in Niamey, who are bound for Agadez where approximately 1,100 American soldiers are currently stationed.

The presence of Russian instructors in Niger follows a recent conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Nigerien General Abdourahamane Tiani on March 26, where they discussed strategies for enhancing security and combating terrorism.

Since the military coup in Niger last year, the country’s junta has been forging closer military ties with Russia while distancing itself from the US and France.

Notably, the junta announced last month the termination of an agreement with the US that permitted military personnel and civilian staff from the US Department of Defense to operate in Niger. Meanwhile, France, Niger’s former colonial ruler, completed the withdrawal of its troops from the nation at the end of 2023. — CNN
