Norway’s King Harald scales back official duties due to age
In a move described as “out of consideration for his age”, Norway’s royal household announced that King Harald, 88, will be permanently reducing his public engagements.
Harald, one of Europe’s longest reigning monarchs since 1991, has faced health challenges in recent years, including a hospitalization in Malaysia in February for an infection contracted while on holiday in Langkawi.
Since then, he has not made any public appearances, with his son, Crown Prince Haakon, stepping in to fulfill his duties.
The royal household mentioned that “practical arrangements” will be made for the king’s official activities, although specific details were not provided.
Despite his health issues, King Harald has expressed his commitment to continue serving as monarch, stating that he has taken an oath “that lasts for life”.
A popular figure among Norwegians, a recent survey showed that a majority of the population does not wish for him to abdicate in favor of his son, and there is strong support for the monarchy in the country.
