Unearthing the Past: Rare Crocodile-Like Fossil Discovered in India
DELHI — In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers in India have stumbled upon the fossilised remains of a rare crocodile-like species from the Jurassic era in the western state of Rajasthan.
Ancient Relic
The fossil, identified as a phytosaur, measures between 1.5 to two meters and is estimated to be over 200 million years old, according to researchers. It was found at Megha village in Jaisalmer district by a team led by senior hydrogeologist Dr. Narayandas Inkhiya.
Clues to Evolution
Dr. Inkhiya believes that the site may hold more hidden fossils that could offer crucial insights into the history of evolution. The discovery also paves the way for potential fossil tourism in the area.
Evolutionary Link
Geoscientist CP Rajendran explained that the phytosaur was a semi-aquatic creature, living both in water and on land, before eventually evolving into the crocodiles we know today.
Surprising Find
The remains were initially spotted by villagers as they were excavating a lake in the region. The discovery of what appears to be a fossilised egg alongside the phytosaur hints at the creature’s lifestyle and diet millions of years ago.
Rare Specimen
Senior palaeontologist VS Parihar, leading the research, described the phytosaur as a medium-sized creature that likely inhabited the riverbank in the area. The rarity of the find is underscored by the limited discoveries of phytosaur remains worldwide.
Geological Riches
The region of Jaisalmer, part of the Lathi formation, has a rich history of dinosaur presence during the Jurassic era. This recent discovery adds to a growing list of significant fossil finds in the area.
In 2018, scientists from the Geological Survey of India uncovered fossils of the oldest herbivorous dinosaur ever found in the same region. The uncovering of these ancient relics continues to captivate researchers and enthusiasts alike. — BBC
