Arab Mediators Await Response from Israel on Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release Deal
CAIRO — Arab mediators are eagerly awaiting a formal response from Israel following Hamas’ acceptance of a new proposal for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.
The plan, presented by Qatar and Egypt, aims to prevent a potential large-scale Israeli offensive to fully occupy Gaza.
Qatar stated that the proposal is “almost identical” to a U.S. plan for a 60-day truce, where approximately half of the 50 hostages held in Gaza would be released, with negotiations for a lasting ceasefire and the return of the remaining hostages to follow.
Israel, however, has made it clear that they will only accept a comprehensive deal that includes the release of all hostages.
Reports suggest that the Israeli cabinet is likely to approve a military plan to occupy Gaza City later this week, as escalating Israeli strikes have already forced thousands to flee the area.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel’s intentions to conquer all of Gaza, including the areas where most of the 2.1 million Palestinian residents have sought refuge, after failed ceasefire talks with Hamas last month.
Hamas recently announced their approval of a ceasefire proposal from Egyptian and Qatari mediators, describing it as a “partial deal leading to a comprehensive deal.”
Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman mentioned that the proposal is “98%” similar to a previous U.S. plan, with negotiations set to begin immediately upon implementation.
While Israel accepted the previous U.S. plan, Hamas rejected it due to concerns about a permanent ceasefire not being guaranteed.
The families of hostages fear the potential new offensive in Gaza City could jeopardize the safety of those being held captive.
Recent demonstrations in Tel Aviv saw hundreds of thousands of Israelis urging their government to reach a deal with Hamas to end the conflict and bring all hostages home.
The ongoing crisis in Gaza has resulted in thousands of casualties, widespread displacement, and severe humanitarian challenges, with experts warning of a looming famine due to food shortages. – BBC
