Netanyahu Defiant Amid US Warning on Rafah Invasion

TEL AVIV — In a bold declaration, Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted that Israel is prepared to “stand alone” in the face of potential repercussions from the US, after warnings that arms shipments could be halted if Israel proceeds with a full-scale invasion of Rafah in Gaza.

Thousands have already evacuated the southern city following the initiation of a “limited” operation by the Israeli military on Monday.

US President Joe Biden has adamantly cautioned against the operation, emphasizing that it would cross a critical “red line”.

Disregarding the US caution, Netanyahu affirmed Israel’s commitment to persist with its plans.

“If necessary, we will stand alone. I have made it clear that we are prepared to fight with all we have,” stated the prime minister.

Netanyahu referenced the historical War of Independence in 1948, where Israel faced an onslaught from a coalition of Arab states, to underscore his dismissal of the US warnings.

“In the face of overwhelming odds 76 years ago, we stood strong against many. Despite lacking weapons and facing an arms embargo, we emerged victorious through our spirit, heroism, and unity,” he asserted.

Despite Netanyahu’s unwavering stance, his government is under pressure following the suspension of arms deliveries by the US over concerns of civilian casualties in Rafah.

Biden escalated the warning in a recent CNN interview, indicating a potential halt in supplies of artillery shells and other weaponry if the invasion proceeds.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant dismissed the US warnings, emphasizing Israel’s resilience against any attempts to subdue it.

“We will stand firm, and we will achieve our objectives,” Gallant affirmed.

The UN reported that over 80,000 individuals have fled Rafah amidst relentless bombardment, with concerns over diminishing food and fuel supplies for the remaining million sheltering in the city.

Israeli forces have closed off the Rafah crossing with Egypt and are engaged in targeted operations against Hamas elements in the city.

Amidst the escalating tensions, hopes for a peace deal have dimmed as both Israeli and Hamas delegations exited indirect talks in Cairo.

Israel asserts that victory against Hamas in Gaza hinges on capturing Rafah and eliminating the last remaining Hamas forces.

The conflict in Gaza, triggered by Hamas attacks on southern Israel in October, has resulted in a significant loss of life and ongoing hostilities.

Israel reports missing hostages and casualties, while Gaza’s health ministry records a high death toll.

As the standoff continues, Netanyahu’s defiance and Israel’s determination to press forward underscore the escalating tensions and risks in the region.

Amidst the turmoil, the fate of Rafah hangs in the balance, with the specter of a full-scale invasion looming large.
