Man Mistakenly Released from Texas Jail
In a shocking turn of events, authorities in Houston, Texas are currently on the lookout for a man who was “mistakenly” released from jail just as he was about to start serving a seven-year sentence.
Tory Dugas, a 36-year-old individual, had been handed a five-year state prison sentence for assaulting a family member and an additional two years for evading arrest, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. However, instead of beginning his sentence, Dugas was released at 04:30 local time on Sunday after being held in Harris County jail since Thursday for charges that were eventually dismissed.
An investigation is now in progress to determine the cause of this “erroneous release” from jail, as stated by the sheriff’s office. It seems that an oversight in documenting Dugas’ state prison sentence in his file led to the mistaken belief that he was eligible for release.
Jason Spencer, a spokesperson for the police, revealed to the Houston Chronicle that the jail only realized Dugas was missing on Monday morning while reviewing the list of individuals scheduled for transfer to state custody.
Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information on Dugas’ whereabouts.
This incident marks another instance of the Harris County jail mistakenly releasing an individual. Earlier this year, a man facing capital murder charges was set free due to a mix-up with someone sharing the same name. Fortunately, the man turned himself in after being at large for 24 hours. — BBC
