KUWAIT’S NEW PRIME MINISTER APPOINTED BY EMIR
Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah of Kuwait made a significant announcement on Monday, assigning Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as the new prime minister. This decision came after the recent parliamentary elections in the Gulf state.
Sheikh Mishal has tasked the former oil minister with the crucial responsibility of forming a new government, as reported by state media. An Emiri Order was issued by the Emir, assigning Sheikh Ahmad to assemble a cabinet and submit the names of potential ministers for appointment.
The Emir has directed the prime minister to keep the National Assembly informed, emphasizing that the order will only come into effect once it is officially published in the gazette.
“Today, an Emiri order was issued appointing Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as prime minister and assigning him the task of selecting members for the new Cabinet,” stated the Kuwait News Agency.
This development comes shortly after Sheikh Mishal assumed the throne and less than two weeks following Kuwait’s third parliamentary election in as many years, which saw the opposition retaining its majority.
Following the polls held on April 4th, the government resigned the next day. The outgoing prime minister, Sheikh Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, declined to resume his position amid ongoing tensions between the government and the 50-member National Assembly, as reported by AFP.
The newly appointed prime minister, 71-year-old Sheikh Ahmad, previously served as the oil and information minister from 2009 to 2011. He has most recently held the position of head of the crown prince’s court with a ministerial rank.
Sheikh Ahmad obtained a bachelor’s degree in finance, banking, and investment from the University of Illinois. — Agencies
