Saudi Arabia Joins Paris Camel Parade to Celebrate International Year of Camelids
PARIS — The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia made a grand appearance at the “camel parade” in the heart of Paris over the weekend.
The event, organized by the French Federation for the Development of Camelids in France and Europe, was a vibrant celebration marking the United Nations’ declaration of 2024 as the “International Year of Camelids.”
Under the patronage of the International Camel Organization and with the support of the Saudi Ministry of Culture and the Camel Club of the Kingdom, the parade brought together a diverse array of participants from around the world, including government officials, camel experts, and enthusiasts.
Saudi Arabia used this platform to introduce the global community to its “Year of the Camel 2024” initiative, highlighting the cultural significance of camels in Saudi society both historically and in the present day.
This year’s camel march marked its third edition, making a triumphant return to the streets of Paris for the first time since 1926. The route passed by the iconic Château de Vincennes, a historic royal palace dating back to the 12th century and now a popular tourist destination.
More than 30 countries took part in the parade, showcasing over fifty camels and presenting traditional performances. Participants included nations such as the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Canada, India, and Morocco, among others.
Prior to the parade, dialogue sessions were held at the Château de Janvry Historical Center, focusing on sharing knowledge and celebrating global camel heritage. Each country’s contributions to the International Year of Camelids 2024 were highlighted during these sessions.
The day concluded with a reception for distinguished guests, including representatives from international organizations, academia, research centers, and delegations from participating countries, as well as members of the media.
Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the event underscores its pivotal role in launching the International Year of Camelids 2024 through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), demonstrating its commitment to developing the camel sector for food security and economic growth.
The Ministry of Culture’s participation reflects its diverse objectives, from supporting the International Year of Camelids to promoting the “Year of the Camel 2024” initiative and showcasing the cultural and social importance of camels in Saudi Arabia.
By raising awareness about the economic and cultural value of camels, Saudi Arabia aims to emphasize their enduring significance in various communities and foster international cultural exchange in line with the goals of Vision 2030. — SPA
