French MEP Rima Hassan Honored by Naming of Graduating Class
In a bold and controversial move, students at Brussels Free University (ULB) faculty of law have decided to name their graduating class after French MEP Rima Hassan. The politician of Palestinian origin, who was born in a refugee camp and raised in France, has stirred up protests in Belgium and France for her radical views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Despite facing backlash for her involvement in the ‘Freedom Flotilla’ and being detained by Israeli authorities, Hassan remains unapologetic. In fact, when she returned to France, a large demonstration in Paris celebrated her homecoming.
However, the decision to honor Hassan did not sit well with everyone. Nearly 1,300 individuals signed a letter opposing the move, but the law faculty students stood by their decision in a revote held in August.
Public figures, including former French minister Bernard Kouchner, have condemned the students’ choice, labeling it “calamitous.” Hassan herself is facing prosecution in France for her controversial remarks on terrorism, but she remains defiant in her stance.
Despite the criticism, ULB’s students defended their decision, stating that politicians would not dictate their choices. The ULB Student Union (BEA) emphasized that the selection of Hassan was the result of a democratic process that upheld the principles of free inquiry and solidarity.
As the controversy continues to swirl, Hassan expressed her gratitude for the students’ unwavering support. She remains committed to her cause and is currently involved in humanitarian efforts to support the Palestinian people.
The “Global Sumud Flotilla,” a non-violent mission to aid Gaza, is underway with ships from various countries converging towards the region. While Hassan was unable to join the flotilla due to prior commitments, other activists, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham, are on board.
Despite facing challenges such as inclement weather, the flotilla remains determined to reach Gaza and provide much-needed assistance to those in need. The mission continues to garner international attention and support as it navigates through rough seas towards its destination.
