JEDDAH: A Milestone Achievement in Saudi Defense Manufacturing
In a groundbreaking meeting at Arabian International Company for Steel Structures (AIC) in Jeddah, key players in the defense industry celebrated a significant achievement. Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control President Tim Cahill, General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) Assistant Deputy Nawaf Albawardi, and AIC President Wasim Attieh came together to commemorate the completion of the first locally manufactured components for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) launcher.
This milestone marks a pivotal moment in the growing collaboration between AIC and Lockheed Martin, with a focus on advancing Saudi Arabia’s defense manufacturing capabilities.
The locally produced components, developed through precision welding and advanced manufacturing techniques, not only strengthen the Kingdom’s defense industrial base but also bolster the U.S. supply chain by creating a second source of production.
“This achievement is a testament to the strong partnership between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as we work towards fulfilling the Kingdom’s THAAD procurement,” remarked Tim Cahill.
“Through this program, we are not just supporting Saudi Vision 2030 and enhancing regional defense capacity, but also creating high-quality manufacturing jobs in the United States and fortifying the American defense industrial base.”
President Wasim Attieh of AIC Steel expressed his appreciation for the collaboration, stating, “Lockheed Martin has been an invaluable partner in equipping us with the tools and training needed to facilitate the localized production of such a vital component of the THAAD Weapon System. I am excited to continue working together to ensure a more secure future for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” He also acknowledged GAMI’s unwavering support throughout the project.
THAAD is a battle-tested missile defense system designed to intercept short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles both within and outside the earth’s atmosphere. Its operational readiness, successful flight tests, and proven track record continue to attract international interest. — SG
