Villa Hegra Launches Groundbreaking Curatorial Program in AlUla

ALULA — Villa Hegra, the French-Saudi cultural institution, is on the brink of unveiling its inaugural curatorial program, signaling a dawn of artistic collaboration between France and Saudi Arabia.

A New Chapter in Cross-Cultural Dialogue

This bold initiative, a highlight of Villa Hegra’s upcoming 2023-2024 preopening season, will shine a spotlight on the joint efforts of four esteemed artists from both nations, underscoring the institution’s commitment to fostering intercultural communication and laying the groundwork for future artist residencies.

Immersive Artistic Exploration

Curated by Wejdan Reda and Arnaud Morand, the program is meticulously crafted to immerse artists in AlUla’s vibrant heritage and picturesque surroundings, urging them to engage with the local community through innovative means. This venture not only pledges to elevate the creative dialogue between the participating countries but also to enrich Villa Hegra’s cultural repertoire in anticipation of its grand unveiling.

Innovative Collaborative Projects

The program unfolds with two distinct artistic projects. The first, a cutting-edge art commission, pairs the talents of Saudi-American visual and performance artist Sarah Brahim with French artist Ugo Schiavi, embarking on a joint exploration that integrates thorough research and interdisciplinary support to fashion a site-specific installation in AlUla.

The second project, dubbed the “Art Retreat,” provides a canvas for Saudi artist Abdulrahman Alsoliman and French visual artist and stage director Théo Mercier to draw inspiration from AlUla’s historical and natural wonders, creating a space for artistic evolution and cultural enlightenment.

Shaping the Future of Villa Hegra

These initiatives transcend mere artistic expression, serving as the cornerstone of Villa Hegra’s mission and vision. The curators stress that this program is an open call to artists to contribute to the evolving narrative of Villa Hegra, envisioning its future as a bastion of artistic innovation and cultural exchange.

A Symbol of Transnational Collaboration

Standing as a symbol of the fruitful partnership between Saudi Arabia and France, Villa Hegra, designed by the renowned French architecture firm Lacaton & Vassal, is slated to open its doors in 2026 in AlUla, serving as a hub for artist residencies and cultural enrichment.

Leading up to its official inauguration, a diverse array of cultural activities, including workshops, performances, and retreats, will be presented, marking a new chapter in the cultural synergy between the two nations. — SG
