EU countries urged to unite in recognizing State of Palestine by Charles Michel

EU Leaders Urged to Coordinate Recognition of State of Palestine

BRUSSELS — In a bold move, European Council President Charles Michel has called on European Union countries willing to recognize the State of Palestine to act in unison, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to drive significant progress towards peace in the conflict-ridden region.

Addressing journalists in Brussels, Michel proposed “coordination at EU level” among member states ready to formally acknowledge a Palestinian sovereign state, a sentiment that has gained momentum following recent endorsements from Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and Malta.

While nine EU member states already recognize the Palestinians’ right to statehood, the EU’s official stance remains that recognition will occur once a Palestinian state is established as part of a two-state solution.

Michel highlighted the potential leverage a united front could provide in encouraging necessary reforms by both Israel and the Palestinian Authority to facilitate a two-state solution.

He hinted at utilizing existing tools, such as the EU-Israel Association Agreement, to ensure compliance with international law and human rights standards.

The call for coordinated recognition comes amidst mounting international pressure to address human rights violations in Gaza, with calls to halt arms sales to Israel.

As discussions continue within the EU, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain has indicated plans to recognize the State of Palestine by July, signaling a shift in the bloc’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Despite differing opinions among member states, the EU aims to play a crucial role in future negotiations between Israel and Palestine, bolstering its position as a mediator in the peace process.

While challenges remain in reaching unanimous agreements, Michel remains optimistic that the conditions for formal recognition of Palestinian statehood will align in the future.

As tensions persist in the Middle East, the EU’s efforts to foster peace and stability through coordinated action will be closely watched. — Euronews
