Elon Musk’s Neuralink Successfully Implants Chip in Human Brain

In a groundbreaking move, Elon Musk announced that his company Neuralink has achieved a major milestone by successfully implanting one of its chip implants into a human brain.

The surgery took place on Sunday and Musk revealed on X that the patient is recovering well. Initial results are showing promising neuron spike detection, marking a significant step forward in the company’s mission to connect human brains to computers.

Neuralink’s ultimate goal is to address neurological conditions and “unlock human potential tomorrow,” as stated on the company’s website. This recent development paves the way for future commercial use.

Last year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Neuralink’s first trial, allowing the company to proceed with the groundbreaking procedure. The implant involves the insertion of 64 flexible threads into a specific part of the brain that controls movement intention.

These threads are incredibly fine, requiring a robot for precise implantation. Once in place, the threads enable the implant to record and transmit brain signals to an app, which can decode a person’s movement intentions.

Powered by a wireless-charged battery, the implant represents a revolutionary advancement in merging technology with the human brain.

In a post on X, Musk announced that Neuralink’s first product will be called Telepathy. This innovative technology will allow users to control their phone or computer, and eventually any device, simply by thought.

Musk envisions Telepathy benefiting individuals who have lost limb function, enabling them to communicate and interact with the world at a level previously unimaginable. The ultimate goal is to enhance communication speed and efficiency, as demonstrated by the late Stephen Hawking.

While Neuralink is making waves in the field of brain-computer interfaces, it is not the first company to venture into this territory. Blackrock Neurotech, a US tech company, began implanting brain chips as early as 2004.
