Revolutionizing Regional Architecture: AlMusalla Prize Winners Announced
JEDDAH — In a groundbreaking announcement, the Diriyah Biennale Foundation has revealed the winners of the inaugural AlMusalla Prize. EAST Architecture Studio, in collaboration with artist Rayyane Tabet and UK-based engineers AKT II, claimed the prestigious award.
This architectural competition, a highlight of the Islamic Arts Biennale, showcases cutting-edge and sustainable designs for a prayer space, or Musalla, to be constructed at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The winning design, inspired by regional weaving traditions, features a modular structure crafted from sustainable materials sourced from local date palm trees. Utilizing palm fronds and fibers, the Musalla embodies a commitment to sustainability and adaptability, with plans to disassemble and relocate it after the Biennale.
Chosen from a distinguished group of architects, the winning team’s design embodies Islamic values of unity and closeness in prayer, while also prioritizing environmental sustainability. Serving as a model for future regional architecture, the Musalla’s use of local materials and modular design presents a roadmap for sustainable construction deeply rooted in tradition.
Paying tribute to Jeddah’s heritage, the Musalla’s design features elements reminiscent of the city’s traditional AlBalad district. The central courtyard and woven prayer spaces evoke a loom, accentuated by natural dyes and textiles that enhance its aesthetic appeal within a landscape grid inspired by palm-tree plantations.
Under the leadership of Prince Nawaf Bin Ayyaf, the jury commended the project for its innovative fusion of architecture, art, and engineering, as well as its inclusive and community-focused design. The unveiling of the Musalla is eagerly anticipated at the upcoming Islamic Arts Biennale, set to commence on January 25, 2025.
CEO Aya Al-Bakree of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation praised the winning team’s ability to blend creativity, sustainability, and cultural heritage in creating an inspiring space for reflection and connection. — SG
