Shahad Ameen Completes Production on New Film “Hijra”
JEDDAH — Saudi film director Shahad Ameen has wrapped up filming her latest project, “Hijra,” marking her second directorial venture following the success of “Scales.”
After three years of development in collaboration with Iraqi filmmaker and producer Mohamed Al-Daradji, “Hijra” is poised to be another standout addition to Ameen’s impressive portfolio.
Spanning across eight Saudi cities including Taif, Jeddah, and AlUla, the film follows the journey of a woman and her granddaughters, showcasing the deep bonds between generations of Saudi women. The narrative takes viewers on a captivating exploration of the country’s diverse cultural landscape.
Starring Khairiya Nazmi as the grandmother and newcomer Lamar Feddan as granddaughter Janna, “Hijra” also boasts an international crew with French editor Hervé de Luz and cinematographer Miguel Litten Menz, infusing a global perspective into the Saudi story.
Reflecting on the project, Ameen expressed, “Filming ‘Hijra’ across Saudi Arabia allowed us to delve into the rich cultural tapestry of our nation. This film, deeply rooted in Saudi heritage and the empowering role of women, has been a challenging yet immensely rewarding experience.”
Co-producer Mohamed Hefzy praised Ameen’s growth as a filmmaker since “Scales,” noting that “Hijra” showcases her visionary storytelling approach and marks an ambitious stride in her career.
Produced by Biet Ameen Production, The Iraqi Independent Film Center, HumanFilm UK, and Ideation Studio led by Faisal Baltyuor, “Hijra” will be distributed in Saudi Arabia through Baltyuor’s Cinewaves, with Film Clinic Indie Distribution managing sales across the Arab world. — SG
