Man Killed in Shark Attack at Long Reef Beach in Sydney
A tragic incident unfolded at Long Reef Beach in Sydney on Saturday, as a man fell victim to a fatal shark attack, according to authorities in New South Wales.
Emergency services sprang into action shortly after 10 a.m. (0000 GMT) following reports of a “large” shark attack that left the man critically injured. Despite efforts to save him, the man tragically passed away at the scene.
“Officers from the Northern Beaches Police Area Command have taken swift action to close the beach and will be working closely with experts from the Department of Primary Industries to identify the specific shark species responsible for this tragedy,” a police statement read.
In response to the incident, beaches spanning a 9-kilometer (5.5-mile) stretch of Sydney’s northern coast have been shut down until further notice to ensure the safety of beachgoers.
As part of the investigation into the shark attack, experts will be analyzing two sections of the damaged surfboard found at the scene. — Agencies
