Call for Global Peace Dominates Oscars Ceremony
In a surprising turn of events, Sunday’s Oscars ceremony steered clear of politics but instead witnessed multiple impassioned calls for global peace.
Jonathan Glazer’s Powerful Message
Upon receiving the Academy Award for best international feature for his film “The Zone of Interest,” Jonathan Glazer used his acceptance speech to shed light on the horrors of dehumanization. He emphasized, “Our film shows where dehumanization leads, at its worst.”
Glazer also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, stating, “Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.”
Mstyslav Chernov’s Heartfelt Plea
Director Mstyslav Chernov, after winning the best feature documentary feature Oscar for “20 Days In Mariupol,” made a poignant plea for peace. He expressed regret for having to make a film about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, wishing for a world where such conflicts never occur.
Chernov highlighted the importance of setting the historical record straight and ensuring that the sacrifices made by the people of Mariupol are never forgotten.
Fashion as a Symbol of Peace
Several celebrities at the Oscars, including Billie Eilish, Finneas, Mahershala Ali, and Ava DuVernay, donned red pins as a symbolic gesture of support for an immediate cease-fire, release of hostages, and delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.
Political Tensions Surface
While politics took a backseat at the Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t resist a jab at former President Donald Trump by reading a post from him on Truth Social. The evening, however, was primarily dedicated to advocating for peace and remembrance of past atrocities.
