LISBON IN FLAMES: Wildfires Sweep Across Portugal
In a battle against raging wildfires, over 5,000 firefighters are on the frontlines in Portugal as temperatures soar above 30C (86F) and the country faces its highest wildfire risk.
Prime Minister Louis Montenegro mourned the loss of firefighter João Silva, who tragically passed away while fighting a blaze in Oliveira de Azeméis.
With at least two reported deaths and over 10,000 hectares burned, Portuguese authorities warn of a “very high” threat of wildfires until Friday, with 128 active blazes across the country.
Hospitals are treating individuals with burns and breathing difficulties, while police have shut down major motorways as at least 12 firefighters have been injured, two severely.
The European Union is stepping in to assist, sending eight firefighting planes to Portugal, with France, Greece, Italy, and Spain also providing crucial support.
Despite a wet start to the year, Portugal and Spain remain vulnerable to wildfires due to hot and dry conditions, exacerbated by climate change.
