Global Outages Strike Social Media Giant X
WASHINGTON — The once-revered Twitter, now known as social media platform X, was hit with widespread outages for just over an hour on Thursday.
According to Downdetector.com, a site that monitors outages by aggregating status reports, over 47,000 users in the US encountered access issues with X and X Pro.
Users in the UK and Asia also found themselves unable to view posts on the platform, greeted instead with a message reading “Welcome to X!”
X, which is under the ownership of tech mogul Elon Musk, has yet to provide a comment on the outage. Musk acquired Twitter for a hefty $44 billion (£35 billion) just last year.
The hashtag #TwitterDown swiftly gained traction as reports of the outages began to surface.
Fortunately, the disruption was short-lived, and users were able to regain access to the platform after slightly over an hour.
Since Musk’s acquisition of the platform, X has been grappling with a decline in advertising revenue.
Furthermore, Musk has faced criticism for allegedly allowing antisemitic content to appear alongside advertisements.
The company took legal action against left-leaning advocacy group Media Matters for America, which had made the accusation.
In a recent incident, Musk lashed out at advertisers who abandoned X, warning that they could spell the demise of the social media giant.
Additionally, X has come under fire for purportedly spreading disinformation, prompting the European Union to formally accuse the platform of violating regulations related to combating illegal content and disinformation. — BBC
