Antony Blinken to Travel to Middle East Amid Deadlocked Talks
In a bold move, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to embark on a diplomatic mission to Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia this week. With talks between Israel and Hamas at a standstill, Blinken’s visit aims to meet with regional partners in search of solutions.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The Secretary will discuss ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza that secures the release of hostages and how it is Hamas that is standing between the Palestinian people and a ceasefire.” Despite extensive mediation efforts by Qatar and Egypt, Hamas and Israel have yet to reach an agreement on a deal for hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza.
During his trip, Blinken will also focus on increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza and ensuring its sustainability. The top American diplomat will engage with aid organizations and government officials in Jordan and Israel to address the pressing humanitarian crisis.
Additionally, Blinken’s visit comes after a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last month in Jeddah. Discussions centered on efforts to release hostages held by Hamas and potentially normalizing ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
Speaking to CNN, Blinken expressed optimism about the potential for a framework for normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, alongside a two-state solution proposal for Israel and the Palestinians. He stressed the importance of resolving the conflict in Gaza and reaching a resolution on the Palestinian question for lasting peace in the region.
