Sanders Supports Protests Against Israel’s War in Gaza
In a fiery statement, Sen. Bernie Sanders voiced his support for protests against Israel’s war in Gaza while emphasizing the importance of condemning all forms of bigotry, including antisemitism and Islamophobia.
“What Netanyahu’s right-wing, extremist and racist government is doing is unprecedented in the modern history of warfare,” Sanders declared to CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.” “Right now, we are looking at the possibility of mass starvation and famine in Gaza. When you make those charges, that is not antisemitic. That is a reality.”
College campuses across the United States have become hotbeds of pro-Palestinian protests in the wake of escalating tensions in the region. As Hamas’ attack on Israel led to a devastating toll, Israel’s retaliatory assault has sparked outrage and activism among students.
Amidst the protests, incidents of antisemitism and Islamophobia have surged, prompting university leaders to grapple with the fine line between free speech and threatening behavior.
“I’m Jewish, all right? My father’s family was wiped out by Hitler. Antisemitism is a disgusting and vile form of bigotry which has killed millions of people,” Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, emphasized. “I would hope that every American condemns antisemitism. We condemn Islamophobia and all forms of bigotry.”
Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy echoed Sanders’ sentiments, advocating for the protection of students’ right to peacefully protest and speak out against perceived injustices.
While the debate rages on, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell emphasized the importance of maintaining order and upholding free speech on campuses, urging university presidents to address the situation and push back against antisemitism.
