Belgium to Officially Recognize Palestine at UN – Breaking News

Belgium to Recognize Palestinian State at UN General Assembly

In a bold move, Belgium is set to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session on 9 September. Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced the decision, joining other countries like Australia, France, Canada, and the UK in putting pressure on Israel.

Sanctions Imposed on Israeli Government

Prevot revealed that Belgium will impose 12 sanctions on Israel at the national level in response to the “humanitarian tragedy in Palestine” and Israel’s actions that violate international law. The aim is to pressure the Israeli government to respect international and humanitarian law.

Measures Taken by Belgium

The sanctions include banning the import of products from Israeli settlements, reviewing public procurement policies with Israeli companies, and restricting consular assistance to Belgian nationals in illegal settlements. There will also be potential judicial prosecutions, bans on overflights and transit, and designations of certain Israeli ministers, Hamas leaders, and violent settlers as ‘persona non-grata’ in Belgium.

Support at EU Level

Belgium will support measures at the EU level to suspend cooperation with Israel, including the suspension of the bloc’s association agreement, research programs, and technical cooperation. The goal is to push for a two-state solution and condemn Israel’s expansionist ambitions.

Accountability for Israeli Actions

Prevot stressed that the measures are not against the Jewish people but aim to hold the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accountable for its actions. Belgium will also take steps against the glorification of Hamas and antisemitism.

Implementation of Measures

The measures will be implemented by royal decree once the last hostage held by Hamas in Gaza is released, and the group no longer plays a role in managing Palestine. This decision comes amidst Israel’s 22-month offensive on Gaza.
