Tina Turner’s Lost Song Rediscovered
LOS ANGELES — A long-lost song recorded for Tina Turner’s iconic album Private Dancer has finally been rediscovered. The track, titled Hot For You, Baby, will make its debut on BBC Radio 2.
Originally recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, Hot For You, Baby was initially intended to be included on the album. However, it was ultimately left off in favor of other hit songs like What’s Love Got To Do With It and Better Be Good To Me.
Presumed to be lost, the master tape of the song was recently found as Turner’s record label prepared for a 40th-anniversary re-release of Private Dancer.
Hot For You, Baby is an upbeat rock track featuring flashy guitar chords and a quintessentially 1980s cowbell. It showcases Turner’s signature raspy and soulful vocal style.
The song will premiere on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Thursday, between 08:30 and 09:00 GMT.
Produced by John Grant, the same executive behind Turner’s successful mid-career comeback, Hot For You, Baby was written by Australian musicians George Young and Harry Vanda.
The track had previously been recorded by Scottish-Australian singer John Paul Young but did not gain much attention upon its release in 1979.
Private Dancer, released in 1984, marked a remarkable second act in Tina Turner’s career after escaping an abusive marriage to Ike Turner in the late 1970s.
The album’s success was a turning point for Turner, who went from struggling to make ends meet to becoming a global superstar.
Private Dancer went on to sell over 10 million copies and earned Turner three Grammy Awards.
As a single, Hot For You, Baby will also be featured on a new deluxe edition of Private Dancer set for release in March.
The collection will include B-sides, remixes, live tracks, and a film of Turner’s performance at Birmingham’s NEC Arena in 1985, with guest appearances by David Bowie and Bryan Adams.
Despite her passing in 2023 at the age of 83, Tina Turner’s legacy continues to captivate fans around the world. No cause of death was disclosed, but Turner battled various health issues in her later years. — BBC
