Angelina Jolie Opens Up About Working with her Sons on Set
LOS ANGELES — Angelina Jolie is notoriously private.
But in a new interview with BBC News, the Hollywood star spoke candidly about her experience of working on set with her eldest sons, saying they saw “the pain” she usually hides from them.
The actress is starring in a new biopic, titled Maria, about opera singer Maria Callas.
Two of Jolie’s six children with ex-husband Brad Pitt, Maddox and Pax, took on roles as production assistants on the film.
“The character [Callas] has a lot of pain and they’ve of course seen me go through a lot of things, but they hadn’t experienced me expressing a lot of the pain that usually a parent hides from a child,” she said.
“So they were there to witness some of that, but then we would hug or they would bring me cups of tea.”
Jolie added that it was “a new way” of finding out how to be honest with her children about her feelings, “in an even greater way”.
Angelina Jolie’s Comeback Role in Maria Biopic
The film Maria, focusing on Maria Callas’s final years in the 1970s, has provided a comeback narrative for Angelina Jolie. Written by Steven Knight, the biopic could potentially lead to an Oscar nomination for best actress for Jolie, who portrays the iconic opera singer.
Callas, a US-born Greek soprano, is one of opera’s most renowned singers. In Maria, a combination of Jolie’s voice and original recordings by Callas are used in the singing scenes. Jolie underwent seven months of opera singing training for the role, describing it as “very physically demanding.”
Despite being initially shy about singing, Jolie found the experience challenging but ultimately enjoyable. She praised the support of the crew in allowing her to explore new talents as an actor.
Family Involvement in Angelina Jolie’s Projects
Angelina Jolie’s sons, Maddox and Pax, have been actively involved in her recent film projects. Both young men served as production assistants on the set of Maria, with Pax even recording Jolie’s singing practice sessions.
Jolie values the opportunity for her children to witness her struggles and growth as an artist, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and resilience. With a close-knit family dynamic, Jolie’s sons have played integral roles in her professional endeavors.
As Jolie continues to navigate her career and personal life post-divorce from Brad Pitt, her dedication to her craft remains unwavering.
