Tom Cruise Receives Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award
LONDON — Tom Cruise, known for his iconic military hero roles on screen, has now been recognized as one in real life.
The legendary “Top Gun” star was presented with the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award in a prestigious ceremony held in London on Tuesday. This award acknowledges Cruise’s significant contributions and unwavering dedication to the US Navy through his impactful work in the film industry.
Described as the Navy’s highest honor for individuals outside of the Department of the Navy, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro personally bestowed the award upon Cruise. In a statement, Del Toro expressed how Cruise’s cinematic endeavors have motivated countless individuals to serve in the Navy and Marine Corps.
Highlighting Cruise’s role in increasing public awareness and appreciation for the Navy’s skilled personnel and the sacrifices they make, the news release lauded his efforts in portraying military characters on the big screen.
Grateful for the recognition, Cruise humbly shared, “I am thrilled to have been a source of inspiration for many sailors, past and present. This achievement is not solely mine, but a collective effort of the talented cast and crew I have had the privilege to work with on various sets.”
Renowned for his portrayal of a Naval fighter pilot in the 1986 classic “Top Gun” and its highly successful 2022 sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” Cruise has solidified his connection with the Navy through his cinematic ventures.
Notably, the Navy credited Cruise’s work on the original “Top Gun” film for sparking a surge in Navy pilot recruitment during its release period. In 2020, both Cruise and the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer were honored as Honorary Naval Aviators by the department.
