Breaking: K-Pop group NewJeans quits agency over mistreatment scandal

NewJeans Girl Band Announces Departure from Ador

SEOUL — In a dramatic late-night press conference on Thursday, the five-member girl band shocked fans by revealing their departure from Ador, a subsidiary of the powerhouse label Hybe.

Ador, however, quickly responded by asserting that their contract with NewJeans remains intact, citing no violations of terms on their end. This dispute marks the latest chapter in a longstanding feud between former NewJeans producer Min Hee-Jin and Hybe’s chairman Bang Si-hyuk, a conflict that has captivated South Korea.

Member Hanni made serious allegations of workplace harassment, stating, “This is not the type of work ethic we respect and not one we want to be a part of.” She went on to accuse the label of mistreatment towards both the group and their staff, citing deliberate miscommunications and manipulation in various aspects.

Ador, standing firm, insisted that their contract with NewJeans remains valid and urged the group to continue their activities with the agency. They expressed disappointment in the group’s hasty termination announcement, emphasizing the need for proper communication.

Legal Battle and Contractual Obligations

NewJeans fired back by filing a legal notice to Ador, demanding resolution of breaches within 14 days under threat of contract termination. They sought an apology for alleged workplace bullying and the reinstatement of Min, their former mastermind.

Despite the looming legal battle, NewJeans assured fans of fulfilling their contractual obligations but warned of potential name changes post-contract termination. The group’s seven-year contract is set to expire in 2029, with provisions for unilateral termination in case of duty violations.

Financial Implications and Denials

Speculations arose regarding contract breach fees amounting to 300bn South Korean Won, but group singer Haerin vehemently denied any wrongdoing, shifting the blame to Hybe and Ador. Ador maintained its stance of not violating contract terms and expressed hopes for open dialogue with NewJeans.

Amidst the controversy, Hybe’s shares took a hit in trading, reflecting the gravity of the situation. NewJeans, formed in 2022 and achieving immense success, faces a turbulent period as they navigate legal battles and contractual disputes.

With their future uncertain, the members of NewJeans remain determined to stand their ground and seek justice in a complex and tumultuous industry. The K-pop world watches closely as this saga unfolds, shaping the landscape of the music industry in South Korea.
