Mass Displacement in Lebanon as Israeli Strikes Continue
BEIRUT — In a swift and chaotic turn of events, one million people in Lebanon have been forced to flee their homes in just a matter of days, according to caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati. The ongoing Israeli strikes in the country have created a dire situation, leading to what Mikati described as the “largest displacement operation” within hours.
Mikati highlighted the challenges posed by this mass exodus, including the urgent need to provide food, shelter, and healthcare to those displaced. The situation also raises concerns about waste management and public health in the affected areas.
Exodus to Syria Escalates
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi reported that over 100,000 individuals have crossed from Lebanon into Syria to escape the escalating violence caused by Israeli air strikes. The exodus shows no signs of slowing down, with UN personnel offering assistance at four border crossings to support the influx of refugees.
This update comes after initial reports on Sunday indicated that close to 80,000 people had sought refuge in Syria within the past week. Lebanese Minister Nasser Yassin revealed that among the displaced, 36,000 were Syrian nationals and 41,300 were Lebanese citizens. The situation remains fluid and continues to evolve rapidly. — Agencies
