Iran-backed Militia Group Announces Attacks on Israel
BAGHDAD — An Iran-backed Iraqi militia group made a bold declaration on Sunday, revealing plans for drone and missile strikes on what they deemed as “vital targets” in Israel.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq took responsibility for the attacks, although they chose to keep the specific locations under wraps.
In a daring move, the group claimed to have targeted a critical site in Israel using drones, in addition to launching upgraded cruise missiles towards northern Israel. The militia also boasted about a separate drone strike in the southern region.
The motive behind these attacks was described as an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people, intended as a direct response to the alleged “massacres committed by the occupation against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly.”
Israeli Army Radio was quick to report that three drones originating from Iraq were intercepted, fortunately resulting in no injuries or damage. Sources from the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper revealed that these interceptions took place near the Israel-occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
These aggressive actions come amidst escalating tensions in the region, sparked by Israel’s recent offensive in the Gaza Strip. The offensive, triggered by a cross-border attack from Hamas on October 7 of the previous year, has reportedly claimed the lives of nearly 41,400 individuals, predominantly women and children. — Agencies
