King Charles Unveils New Banknotes Featuring His Own Face
In a historic moment at Buckingham Palace, King Charles was presented with the first set of new banknotes that will bear his portrait, set to go into circulation in June.
The tradition of the monarch receiving the first issues of new banknotes continued as King Charles inspected the new £5, £10, £20, and £50 notes featuring his likeness.
Despite battling cancer and reducing his public engagements, the King made an appearance to view the new banknotes, presented to him by Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England.
This marks the first time the Bank of England has had to change the monarch on the banknotes, as Queen Elizabeth II was the first to have her portrait featured on all notes.
Impressed by the design, King Charles described the new notes as “very elegant,” showcasing an engraving of himself based on a 2013 photograph.
Unlike his mother’s reign, King Charles is depicted without a crown on the polymer banknotes, symbolizing a transition to a new era.
With new stamps and coins already in circulation, the introduction of the King Charles banknotes marks a significant step towards his reign.
The Bank of England plans a gradual introduction of the new notes, with Queen Elizabeth notes remaining in use until they are worn or damaged.
Despite the official launch on June 5, it may take some time before the new banknotes are widely circulated, especially with the growing trend towards cashless payments.
Preparations for the new notes began last year to ensure a smooth transition, with automated cash machines being updated to recognize the new designs.
