SAN FRANCISCO COASTLINE CRUMBLES INTO THE OCEAN
SAN FRANCISCO — A dramatic scene unfolded on California’s Big Sur coast as a section of roadway collapsed into the ocean after a cliff slipped away, leaving officials to deal with what they are calling a “slip out.”
A segment of Highway 1 has been shut down, as confirmed in a Sunday evening update from Caltrans District 5.
All Big Sur state parks in the affected area have been closed “until further notice,” as announced by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
For essential travelers in the region, access through the closed area will be provided via convoy, as per Caltrans District 5.
The convoy operation is expected to last for the “next several days” while crews work diligently to repair and stabilize the damaged roadway, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
NWS San Francisco Bay Area reported that the landslide on the road occurred around 4 p.m. local time on Saturday.
The closure of various parks, including Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Limekiln State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Point Sur State Historic Park, was detailed in a release from California State Parks.
Campers with reservations in the affected parks will receive a refund for their bookings. — CNN
