LONDON: Banksy Unveils New Mural in North London
LONDON — The mysterious street artist known as Banksy has officially confirmed his latest masterpiece in north London that appeared on Sunday.
Banksy took to social media on Monday to share before and after images of the Finsbury Park mural, showcasing green paint sprayed on a wall behind a cut-back tree to create the illusion of foliage, accompanied by a stencil of a person holding a sprayer.
Locals have flocked to see the mural, with one resident expressing pride in having their street chosen as the canvas. Wanja Sellers, a resident near the mural, remarked, “It feels like a personal message to us residents, we just feel so proud.”
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also expressed his delight at the artwork in his Islington North constituency, stating, “Banksy’s come to Finsbury Park with a bit of greenery in a place that needs a bit more greenery. We’re the most densely populated constituency in the country and I’m just delighted.”
The mural features a striking “arterial spray of green paint” on a white wall, accompanied by a classic Banksy-style stencil, as noted by James Peak, creator of The Banksy Story on BBC Radio 4.
Islington Council confirmed that the green paint used by Banksy matches the council’s signage color in the area, showcasing the artist’s attention to detail.
The artwork, depicting a tree bursting to life in a synthetic manner, has captured the attention of many, with Islington councilor Flora Williamson praising the addition of culture and intrigue to the neighborhood.
Despite the declining health of the cherry tree featured in the mural, Islington Council has pledged to maintain and care for the tree to prolong its lifespan.
Banksy, known for his elusive identity, typically confirms his work through social media, with the latest mural being no exception as he shared images on Instagram without a caption.
The building housing the mural, owned by Alex Georgiou’s company, is currently vacant and on the rental market. Georgiou expressed astonishment and gratitude at the unexpected artwork adorning the building.
Banksy, renowned for iconic pieces like Kissing Coppers and Girl with Balloon, continues to captivate audiences with his thought-provoking and often controversial art.
By incorporating a tree into his latest artwork, Banksy has not only created a visually striking piece but also made it nearly impossible for thieves to steal, as noted by art expert James Peak.
“I don’t think anyone is going to be able to nick this… how are you going to steal a tree?” — BBC
