Netanyahu Downplays Truce Chances in Gaza
In a recent development, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has played down the possibility of a truce in Gaza following Hamas presenting a “comprehensive vision” to mediators.
Netanyahu’s office has dismissed the likelihood of a truce, stating that Hamas is sticking to what they consider to be “unrealistic demands”.
Hamas’s Demands and Recent Incident
Hamas is pushing for a permanent end to the war and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, which has been a major point of contention.
Recent reports from Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry indicate that 20 people were killed while awaiting aid. Israel has denied any involvement and instead accuses armed Palestinians of firing at the crowds.
The incident occurred at the Kuwaiti roundabout on the southern outskirts of Gaza City, a critical drop-off point for limited aid reaching northern Gaza where malnutrition is rampant and famine is a looming threat.
The health ministry has updated the number of injured individuals to 155, with medical teams at Shifa hospital in Gaza City overwhelmed by the severity and volume of injuries.
Israeli Response and Aid Efforts
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have stated that they facilitated the passage of 31 aid trucks to northern Gaza, but that armed Palestinians opened fire on civilians awaiting the convoy’s arrival.
Meanwhile, a ship towing a barge filled with 200 tonnes of food supplies is visible off the Gaza coast, as part of an effort to establish a maritime route for aid delivery.
Israel has expressed willingness to support aid transfer to Gaza while continuing military operations against Hamas.
International Support and Calls for Action
Australia has announced resuming funding to UNRWA, the main United Nations aid agency in Gaza, after a temporary pause due to allegations against its staff.
Australian foreign minister Penny Wong has urged Israel to allow more food into Gaza to address the humanitarian crisis.
Other countries like Canada, Sweden, and the EU have also pledged to resume funding to UNRWA, while the US remains on a payment freeze.
Escalating Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis
The conflict escalated when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel in October, leading to a significant loss of life on both sides. The situation in Gaza remains dire with thousands killed and many more in urgent need of aid. — BBC
