Midair Collision at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport Leaves One Dead, Three Injured

DENVER — Tragedy struck at the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport in northeast Colorado as two small planes collided in midair, resulting in one fatality and three injuries, authorities confirmed.

A Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 were involved in the collision as both pilots were attempting to land on a fateful Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. Each aircraft had two people on board.

First responders were met with a scene of devastation, with dispatch audio captured on Broadcastify revealing descriptions of “black smoke” and “active flames.” In a harrowing moment, one individual was found trapped inside one of the planes.

Dramatic footage from CNN affiliate KMGH depicted one of the aircrafts lying wrecked at the edge of a runway, with a backdrop of black ash and spilled fluid.

While the two occupants of the Cessna managed to survive the crash with minor injuries, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook that one person from the other plane was pronounced dead at the site, and the second individual was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
