Putin praises historic Russia-China relationship before Beijing visit

MOSCOW — Putin Highlights Unprecedented Russia-China Relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the exceptional level of relations between Russia and China, underscoring the economic and strategic aspects of their partnership as he prepares for a four-day visit to China.

Speaking to China’s Xinhua news agency, Putin highlighted the significant increase in bilateral trade by nearly $100 billion since 2021. He stated, “China stands as Russia’s top trading partner, while Russia has ascended to become China’s fifth-largest foreign partner over the past year.”

Furthermore, Putin noted a shift towards conducting settlements “almost entirely in national currencies,” leading to a decline in the dominance of the dollar and euro in trade transactions to negligible levels.

Emphasizing Russia’s role as China’s primary supplier of oil and gas, Putin mentioned that deliveries through the Power of Siberia pipeline had exceeded 100 billion cubic meters since its commencement in 2019. He anticipated a deepening of energy cooperation with the completion of the Far Eastern gas pipeline in 2027.

Putin expressed his anticipation to discuss further avenues for mutually beneficial cooperation during his upcoming visit to China.

Going beyond economic ties, Putin highlighted the joint efforts of Russia and China in global politics, describing their coordination as pivotal. He cited collaborations at the United Nations and the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter as mechanisms to amplify the voice of the Global South.

Both nations advocate for reforms within the UN Security Council to enhance representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, making it more reflective of current global realities.

Putin also commended the collaborative efforts within BRICS to fortify its position as a fundamental component of the international framework.

Condemning Western sanctions as discriminatory, Putin called for reforms within the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. He advocated for a new financial system that is equitable, transparent, and resilient against neocolonial intentions.

Putin’s visit to China commences Sunday at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. He is set to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin before heading to Beijing for ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory over militarist Japan and the conclusion of World War II, where he will be a distinguished guest. — Agencies
