Princess Diana’s Time Capsule Unearthed at London Children’s Hospital
ATLANTA — In a thrilling excavation, a time capsule sealed by Princess Diana in 1991 has been unearthed from a children’s hospital in London to make way for the construction of a new cancer center.
Workers, many of whom were either born in 1991 or already employed at the hospital that year, joined forces to extract the capsule. Among the treasures discovered were a pocket-sized television, a Kylie Minogue CD, and tree seeds, as revealed in a press release from the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH).
Janet Holmes, Senior Health Play Specialist and a GOSH employee from 1991, expressed her delight at finding the pocket TV. “It brought back so many memories seeing the pocket TV in there – I had bought one for my husband back in the day, for when he had a break whilst driving his coach around the country. They were very expensive then!” Holmes shared, as reported by GOSH.
The late Diana, Princess of Wales, served as president of GOSH in 1989 and was renowned for her frequent visits to the hospital to interact with the children. She played a significant role in a time capsule ceremony held in March 1991 during the construction of GOSH’s Variety Club Building.
Two young individuals who won a national competition contributed items for the capsule, aiming to encapsulate life in the 1990s. The contents included a solar-powered calculator, a collection of British coins, a snowflake hologram, a sheet of recycled paper, and a European passport.
Rochana Redkar, Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Haematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at GOSH, was thrilled to witness the unveiling of the time capsule. “It was so lovely to be part of this event. I had just joined GOSH six months before and I was so excited to be involved in the removal of the time capsule, which was buried the year I was born!” Redkar exclaimed, as stated in the press release. – CNN
