DELHI — In a bold move, a White House official has labeled Russia’s conflict with Ukraine as Indian Prime Minister Narendra “Modi’s war”, intensifying pressure on Delhi to cease its oil purchases from Moscow.

US Imposes 50% Tariffs on Indian Goods

US Trade Adviser Peter Navarro made these remarks shortly after the implementation of 50% tariffs on Indian products on Wednesday. The tariffs, some of the highest globally, include a 25% penalty for acquiring weapons and oil from Russia, which the US alleges is a significant source of funding for the Ukrainian conflict.

India Defends Oil Purchases Amid Tariff Dispute

India has denounced the tariffs as unjust and has affirmed that it will not reduce its oil imports, prioritizing the best deal for its 1.4 billion citizens. Despite Russia supplying less than 2% of India’s crude pre-invasion, it now constitutes 35-40% of Delhi’s oil imports, making it the primary source.

US Criticizes India’s Stance

Navarro, in an interview with Bloomberg TV, criticized India’s stance, emphasizing the detrimental impact on American consumers, businesses, workers, and taxpayers. He further urged India to act responsibly as the world’s largest democracy.

Although trade negotiations have been suspended and tariffs imposed, there remains optimism for a resolution between Delhi and Washington. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed confidence in the bilateral relationship, indicating a path forward despite current challenges.
